GSM Phones
Outside
of North America, and a handful of countries, the world operates on a
unified standard call GSM (Global Services for Mobile), and this is why a
cell phone for London will also work in Paris, Johannesburg, Beijing and
Sydney. This GSM standard requires a cell phone and for service with a local
carrier, a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card.

Why Do People Buy Prepaid calling cards?
Many people use a prepaid phone card because of the card’s convenience - it can
be used anywhere and, since you pay in advance, there is no bill. Prepaid
calling cards are popular among travelers, students, people who frequently call
overseas, and those who haven’t selected a long-distance service. In addition,
pre-paid calling cards are sold in convenient places, such as newsstands, post
offices, on the Internet and in stores.
Because these calling cards are
prepaid, you do NOT have to worry about costly long distance phone bills or over
spending on long distance charges. With a prepaid phone card, you pay in advance
so you can spend as little or as much as you can afford.

A prepaid
calling card promises an easy way around the high rates and outrageous
surcharges that hotels and pay phones often extract for long-distance calls. The
rates also beat the pants off the calling-card charges imposed by AT&T, MCI
WorldCom and Sprint. The big three long-distance carriers charge anywhere from
69 cents to 89 cents a minute, plus a surcharge of as much as $1.25 per call if
you don't sign up for a monthly plan.
France's
principal telecom services provider, Alcatel, has won a US$ 100 million
contract to provide Libya with an updated mobile services network. Almost
the entire vast Libyan territory is to be covered by the new infrastructure
by 2005. The Libya contract also constitutes a major UMTS deployment in
Africa.
Alcatel in a statement today announced that it had
signed "a major contract" with Libya's state-controlled General Post and
Telecommunication Company (GPTC) for the supply of GSM/EDGE and 3G/UMTS
infrastructure and services in the North African country. This contract,
which was said to be "worth within the scale of US$ 100 million," was to
increase "Alcatel's leadership in Libya," the Paris-based company said.
